ECOMEDIA GAME DESIGN FALL 2006

Teens in the game design class learned the various components necessary to build a 3D environment using the Unreal Tournament game engine and map editor. They began by conceptualizing ideas derived from both the Bronx River Alliances workshop on watershed physics and open discussions about representing and re-envisioning the natural landscape around the Bronx River. Students sketched floor plans of the physical world they wanted to translate into the virtual, mostly variants on Drew Garden, and created lists of 3D objects they wanted to create and sounds they wanted to capture. Once they had a visual reference, students then learned the interface of Unreal and its tool to construct virtual environments. In addition, students learned the basics of Maya, a professional 3D modeling program, which they used to render fish, invasive species, trees and other elements discussed in the ecological workshops.
