Metastasize
May.
10 — June 14, 2003
Bronx
River Art Center (BRAC) is pleased to present
Metastasize, an exhibit of sculpture and painting, that
explores the continuing influence of surrealism interpreted and expanded
by artists who have come of age in an era defined by popular culture.
Metastasize addresses the explosion of late 90’s pop – influenced
surrealist art by an emerging generation of artists along side a few of
the key figures who have influenced their work.
Twelve artists who deal with growth systems gone awry have been brought
together for this exhibit. Their work captures and digests art’s
recent past, turning it into the silica of a new coral structure. The
intricate build up often resembles a viral explosion in slow motion. There
is a predominate continuum of simultaneous accumulation and decay. These
various elements feed on themselves and on each other, creating a new
system that when sufficiently complex, self organizes at a higher level.
The capacity of surrealistic associations to permeate and merge in maniacal
meanders, entangles the mind in labyrinthine subsystems and anti-architectonic
states.
The artists in the exhibition includes:
Lucky DeBellevue
Gregory Gillespie
Giles Lyon
Christian Schumann
Carl Eckhoff
Adam Henry
