Bronx River
Art Center Presents "ARTSTHMA 2002, Arts against Asthma: A challenging
view of Asthma through Artists' sensibility and expression." Exhibition
Dates: Nov. 9 - Dec. 14, 2002
"Overall,
in recent years, the Bronx is the New York City borough with the highest
rates of both asthma hospitalizations and deaths," according to the New
York City Department of Health's publication, Asthma Facts. Due to this
fact, the aim of this exhibition is to create awareness about asthma.
The show is being curated by Karine Duteil and Koan-Jeff Baysa and features
a wide range of Artists. This event is the second edition of Artsthma,
which was created by Karine Duteil and Denise Romero that took place in
the Bronx in 2000. In conjunction with this exhibition, the Hunts Point
Asthma Quilt is on display at THE POINT Community Development Corporation
940 Garrison Avenue Bronx, NY 10474. For more information call 718-542-0267

Artists:
There is a wide rang of artistic works, from an installation piece by
Marianne Levai made of Baby Breath flowers to a series of ATTACK (#1,
#2, #3, #4) oil on canvas by Matthew D. Mogle featuring a metaphoric Harlequin
of: "sinister and often mischievous appearance because I feel it suits
the personality of asthma very well." There is also black and white photographic
based art entitled 'Wanna' Play" by Beth Parin depicting a child outdoors
staring at a desolated house and landscape, showing the urban asthma complexity.
The exhibit also includes the coffin-like installation of Vivian Ostrow
entitled "Nobody dies from Asthma", and more.
The leit-motif
of Cecilie Dahl's large color photographs of two attractive people connected
via breath and a gum bubble is contrasted with the sculptures of China
Blue and Eve Andrée Laramée. Inspired by the loss of her uncle to
emphysema as a result of smoking cigarettes, Blue's large suspended sculpture
is clogged with tar. Laramée's poignant wall piece symbolizes the powerful
supportive relationship between the artist and her mother, afflicted with
ITP. Dexter Buell's athleticism is emphasized in his series of photographs
of blowing and exhaling during his performance/endurance events, and sharply
compares with Carlo Ferraris' video of breathlessly attempting to intelligibly
recite Dante after sprinting towards the camera from a distance. The struggle
for breath is repeated in Roanne Kulakoff's cinematic span of small self-portraits
underwater in a bathtub, and is also captured in Mark Depman's arresting
single image of a prone figure with a hyper extended neck, bathed in a
glowing green light. The exhibit continues with Janet Goldner's "Can We
Heal" steel book sculpture along with Nicky Enright and John St Peter's
"Inside Outside" oil on sewn canvas. Also, don¹t miss Ivan Pazlamatchev's
"Exhaling II" and Ben Goldman's "Save Me" and "The Shooting" visual puzzles.
Artsthma
2002 is an artistic response to this situation, with a goal of creating
awareness about this condition and it¹s effects on the community.
