All of us
are profoundly affected by the landscapes we inhabit. From the land, we
derive not only our basic food and shelter, but also a sense of who we
are as individuals, communities and nations. The Bronx River Art Centerıs
newest show, Terrarium, brings together thirteen artists that use landscape
and nature as the vehicle of their visual language.
The representation
and understanding of landscape and nature has always been an indicator
of how societies reflect upon their present conditions. In the 19th century,
rebelling against the artificiality of the enlightenment and industrialization,
the Romantics turned towards an idealized view of nature. Realizing their
symbiotic relationship to the land, they paid homage to the naturalistic
world. Similarly, in the 1960s, artists that rejected the commercialization
of art, and reviled the urbanization of natural spaces, supported the
emerging ecological movement with "back to the land" and spiritual attitudes,
giving birth to the movement we now call Earth Art.
Terrarium
includes thirteen artists who work with elements that draw from the natural
landscape. However, their work escapes traditional romantic ideals. Instead,
everything from their choice of materials, to their aesthetics, break
from tradition.
Yuken Teruya
draws from his urban New York surroundings, producing pieces crafted from
the simple and banal material of fast-food paper bags, and transforms
them into delicate trees. Ernesto Caivano has created his own mythology
resulting in his work becoming a mere by-product of his invented story.
Peter Gouldıs work draws on the great outdoors, but the pieces he makes
are vividly counterfeit.
Terrarium
subverts idealized definitions of nature, asking the 21st century viewer
to consider what nature means through alternate forms and perceptions.
Artists
included in Terrarium: Noriko Ambe, Melissa Brown, Ernesto Caivano,
Alfonso Cantu, Anthony Castro, Adam Cvijanovich, Peter Gould, Kimberley
Hart, Chris Kasper, Gabrielle Kanter, Dan Levenson, Yuken Teruya and Antonio
Vigil
