Why I Teach:

I am an interdisciplinary visual artist, educator and independent curator. I  work within disciplines of textile, sculptural installation and performance art. I am teaching art for more than 13 years. For me teaching is a form of activism. I interact with different diverse communities and find a lot of meaning in artistic and social practices that teaching entails . As an educator, I am excited to see my students grow as independent thinkers, creators, and problem solvers. I develop my art curriculum and give students skills that are based on my personal artistic knowledge and experience as a practicing visual artist.

As an educator, I believe that art doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It has to be nurtured and shared within the community.  I have been working with organisations such as Bronx River Art Center, Brooklyn Arts Council and LEAP among the others. I was an educational fellow in Wassaic Project Residency in 2018 where I curated a children's exhibition with the Woodstock Artists Association And Museum as a culmination of the fellowship.

During this time of the social distancing I teach and hope to convey artistic skills, motivation and hope to my students during this challenging time. I prepare presentations, find resources and share links with students who have an available internet at home. The preparation to the class and the delivery of artistic knowledge is a learning curve for me as I never taught online before. I am catching up and learning to adapt my classes and the curriculum to the new normal that we are all facing.
