Check Out BRONX NOW, A Biennial Showcase Of Bronx Artists, Opening This Weekend

By Carl Boisrond | web link

The deep cultural significance of the Bronx should never be taken for granted—this is the borough that gave birth to the most popular genre of American music and where groundbreaking artists like Stanley Kubrick, Al Pacino, Grandmaster Flash, Jennifer Lopez, and Cardi B burst forth. It's also home to a growing community of working visual artists. You’ll find a carefully curated selection of pieces from a few of theses artists at BRONX NOW, a biennial survey at the Bronx River Arts Center opening this weekend.

Curators Laura James and Eileen Walsh, who work under the name BXNYCreative, organized the exhibit as part of their efforts to increase interest in Bronx-based artists. Check out the gallery above for some works from Roy Baizan; Shellyne Rodriguez; Devon Rodriguez; Rigoberto Torres and John Ahearn; and Edgar Santana. And while you’re there, don't miss Ivan Gaete’s site-specific installation, Uprising, a tribute to Bob Marley and Pan-Africanism.

Other participating artists include Benton C Bainbridge, Michael Paul Britto, Julius “Terrible Tkid170” Cavero, CES, Samantha Holmes, MRS, Shellyne Rodriguez, Moses Ros-Suárez, Edgar Santana, Rhynna M. Santos and Natalie C. Wood. Peep their portfolios at bx200.com.

BRONX NOW begins with an opening reception this Saturday, July 14th, from 6-9 p.m. It runs through September 8th, 2018, at the Bronx River Arts Center at 1087 East Tremont Avenue in West Farms. RSVP here.
