Bronx River Art Center is pleased to present a virtual exhibition for artist Chuxi Guo, including his major artworks of installations and videos.

Installation and video artist Chuxi Guo was born in Beijing, China (1990) and now works and lives in New York, where he has created multiple video and video-interactive devices to expand the boundaries of interactive video art. By considering the viewers' sensitivity to the space and information of their bodies and identities and by continuously enhancing or repeating, or weakening or revoking, the images of different identity groups, he constructs a range of image interactions to reveal human identity, self-awareness, and even social and political perspectives.

Trained as an artist in China(BA), Chuxi Guo came to the United States in 2016 and received an MFA degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art (2018). He has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the New York, Maryland, and China arts scenes, having exhibited his work at venues like Chameleon Gallery, The Living Galley Outpost, Novado Gallery, Fanny Fox Decker Gallery, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, and he continues to be sought after by prestigious venues and events. Moreover, we were pleased to present Mr. Guo’s original artwork, “Untouchable”, in the exhibition, Material with Meaning, at Bronx Art River Center from February 8 – March 16, 2019.

For this show, his installation comprises a seemingly empty space, save for the delineation of a central square by four posts connected by an almost invisible wire, as well as a large monitor screen on a nearby wall. When a viewer enters the space, it activates an on-screen animation of a large grey rock that seems to be floating within the confines of the “empty” central square. As the viewer moves, the rock begins to morph into ever more sharply-defined extremities: always and only on the screen. In this work, Guo’s is creating a metaphysical exploration of the nature of materiality situated in the rich ambiguity of the relationship between the viewer, the art object, and the media that communicates its “presence.” The viewer is constrained to question the very essence of seeing, when what we see is, in fact, not “there”? Can an object be “here” and “there” simultaneously?

Guo explains: “Instead of putting the viewer in the virtual world like VR or video games, his interactive artwork lets the form he created in the virtual world enter the real world through a TV. The TV screen mirrors the viewers themselves within a live show of their interaction with the virtual sculpture. A bridge across the virtual space to the exhibition space is constructed to create a new perception of the virtual as a medium and a new relationship between an art piece and its audience.”
