Unusual sights of typical bites
You’ve never seen hamburger buns quite like these.
The Bronx River Art Center (BRAC) is seeking to put a non-traditional spin on the way people view food with “The Food Design Show,” an exhibit that toys with the limitations of how food is thought of, by filtering it through the lens of visual artists.
“The purpose is to see the food as art,” said Karine Duteil, Programs Curator at BRAC. “It’s design that can be eaten.”
As Duteil explained, the ultimate goal of the exhibit goes beyond mere aesthetics.
She said the event is designed to shine light on the fact that many areas of the Bronx offer limited access to healthy foods.
“Many parts of the Bronx are referred to as ‘food deserts,'” remarked Duteil, with fresh vegetables and fruit often hard to come by for families in certain neighborhoods.
“This is a good medium to bring the issue to the forefront,” said Duteil. “We can get people focused on the availability of food within the Bronx.”
Curated by Duteil, “The Food Design Show” will feature the work of master chef and molecular gastronomy pioneer Ferran Adrià, as well as Emilie Baltz, The Cotard Syndicate and visual artist Maggie Nelson.
“The Food Design Show” kicks off on Fri., Jan. 9 with an opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m., and runs until Sat., Jan. 31.
On Thurs., Jan. 22nd, there will be a lecture by Brett Littman, Executive Director at The Drawing Center, who will discuss the work of Adrià.
Founded in 1987, BRAC offers professional arts and education programs to the underserved West Farms neighborhood. In addition to a variety of art exhibits, BRAC runs afterschool youth programs and provides studio space for artists to rent.
The center is occupying a temporary gallery space at 305 East 140th Street, while its East Tremont Avenue headquarters is being renovated.
“The Food Design Show” is the first in a series of food-related exhibits that BRAC will present over the next two years, said the center’s Executive Director, Gail Nathan.
Participating artists will explore such topics as the engineering of food, urban farming, food distribution systems, hunger and food activism.
“The series of food exhibits are designed to heighten awareness, knowledge and enjoyment of healthy food, so as to positively affect the health and well being of our community,” said Nathan.
The Bronx River Art Center’s Food Design Show will be held from January 9 to January 31 at 305 East 140 Street.

El Centro de Arte del río Bronx (BRAC por sus siglas en inglés) está tratando de darle un giro no tradicional a la forma de ver los alimentos con “The Food Design Show”, una exposición que juega con las limitaciones del pensamiento sobre la comida, filtrándola a través del lente de artistas visuales.
“El objetivo es ver a la comida como arte”, dijo Karine Duteil, curadora de programas en BRAC. “Es diseño que puede comerse”.
Como explicó Duteil, el objetivo final de la exposición va más allá de la mera estética.
Explicó que el evento está diseñado para arrojar luz sobre el hecho de que muchas zonas del Bronx tienen acceso limitado a alimentos saludables.
